Well, I have a new computer with Windows 7 and Word 2007! Not sure it’s a good thing or bad thing. More about that later, but first..
Last Cliches:
First Things First – Most important task should have priority. Dates from 19th Cent. Means may well be no time to do more than the most important thing. Shirley Conran (Superwoman, 1975): “First things first, second things never.”
Sob Story – Oversentimental tale, a tearjerker. Dates from early 20th Cent. Represents a reaction to Victorian sentimentality. C.E. Montague (Fiery Particles, 1923) “Thomas Curtayne…be buried in homely state…. Here was a sob story.”
Boils Down to – Simplify or abridge, lead to the crux of the matter. Dates late 19th Cent. Figure of speech—sense of a liquid being reduced and concentrated by the process of boiling to other processes or endeavors.
Lay it On the Line – Speak frankly. Americanism dates early 20th Cent. – meant to hand over money (1920s. By mid-century – meant to speak plainly or categorically; 60’s –lay something on the line — put that thing at risk.
Out of Whack/kilter – Out of adjustment or alignment, not working properly. Dates 17th Cent. James Lowell used in 1862 letter (kilter); whack is late 1800s and is more mysterious.
Now, back to my new computer and Word…
You would think it would be easy as pie, but oh no, Word 2007 is different than 2003 and it keeps changing things on me. Even trying to type in a font, I’ll go along and it will change? Weird. And then I’m working in Excel or on a Word and save it. I’m good, I back it up on a flash drive. What happens?
One minute it’s there, the next it’s gone. This is no laughing matter. I’m talking I type a list of over 150 names. It disappeared from my flash drive–okay, the flash drive is bad. It happens, but it also was corrupted in my computer. So now I have to type everything all over again. I’ve been so busy trying to recoupe the things I’ve lost, that I haven’t had time for much of anything else.
Hopefully I’ll get it figured out soon so I can get back on track.
